Enterprise Library Exhibition

Over the last few weeks the library division has been hosting its latest exhibition called "The History of the Enterprise", librarian Nexus300 Resident put together the event which is taking place at the ground floor of the GFC's HQ building.

The exhibition gives a brief history of some of the enterprise ships which have been seen in the star trek series. On entering the event the first thing you'd probably notice are all the pictures of crew who have commanded one of those versions of the ships in the films or series.

Circling  the trek fleet emblem on the floor are glass cases each holding a fan made model of a version of the enterprise with a description board placed behind it detailing some information about each ship. The models are extremely well made and very detailed.

If your a trek fan in Secondlife pop down while this little exhibition lasts and remember some of the cool Enterprise ships which have left space dock and boldly gone where no man has gone before.

Adventures of the Librarians: The Bridge of Death

GFCA Librarians, in...
The Bridge of Death

Entering an unidentified ship was always a thrill. Sensor readings of this derelict ship had found some interesting energy readings. And there were more than a few officers back on the USS Ajax who wanted to know what secrets this ship's databanks held.

"The Bridge should be around here somewhere." Commodore McMillan commented. He and Ensign Braxx Juventa were assigned to the away team because they were Librarians. Captain MJ Mathy had thought they'd come in handy. "There should be a large room up ahead. That must be the Bridge." He looked at his tricorder. "I think."

"You think?" Captain Mathy asked with a sigh. "Look RoB, no offence, but that's what you said three rooms ago. Are you sure this ship even *has* a Bridge?"

"Sometimes the quest is more important than the discovery," Ensign Juventa spoke up. When the others looked at him, he shrugged. "It's something I read in a fortune cookie."

Just as the team was about to turn back, McMillan pointed ahead, towards a room filled with consoles. "There! I told you! It's the Bridge!"

Quickly, the team hurried towards the main command centre. All of a sudden though, a hologram of an odd looking creature appeared. "I am the Bridgekeeper!" the hologram announced itself. "Who would access the Bridge of Death would answer me these questions three, err the many files he see."

Captain Mathy raised an eyebrow. "I guess it's an automated security system. Sounds horribly familiar, though." He glanced at the Bridgekeeper. "What happens if we get the answer wrong?"

The Bridgekeeper gave a toothy grin. "Then you will be beamed into the blackness of space!" He concluded his threat with a maniacal laugh. "Now, who if you wants to go first?"

"Can't we just deactivate this guy and download the necessary data?" Mathy asked both Librarians. "Or, I don't know, use a tachyon beam to destabilise the holographic emitter? Or something?"

But Juventa shook his head. "It'd take too long for us to find the correct frequency. We're so close!" He then looked at the rest of the away team. "We will access those files, no matter what."

"But what if we answer incorrectly?" asked Mathy. "I don't much care for floating through space without an EV-suit, you know."

"We won't," McMillan said with certainty in his voice. "For you are travelling with Librarians!" With that, both he and Ensign Juventa stepped forward, and confronted the hologram. "Ask us your questions, Bridgekeeper. We are not afraid!"

"What," the strange looking hologram started, "is a different name for the ancient Earth city of Constantinople?"

Captain MJ Mathy frowned. "Somehow I thought he would have started with a different question," He muttered.

If McMillan wasn't sure of the answer, he didn't show it. "Nova Roma," he answered. "Or Byzantium, if you're Greek."

The hologram seemed unimpressed with the correct answer. "What," he spoke up again, "is a popular Romulan sour-tasting sweet?"

This time, it was Ensign Juventa who answered. "The osol-twist," he reacted, answering correctly.

MJ Mathy had to admit, the two Librarians were doing pretty well so far. However, he had a haunting feeling that the final question would be the most difficult one yet...

"What," the hologram started again, about to ask the final question, "was the wingspan of the extinct Xindi-Avians?"

McMillan and Juventa looked at each other for a moment, before glancing back at the hologram. "What do you mean?" asked Juventa, while McMillan added: "the male or the female ones?"

At this, the Bridgekeeper blinked. "Uh... I don't know that."

All of a sudden, the hologram disappeared and seconds later, it could be seen floating in space.

"Nicely done!" Captain Mathy complimented McMillan and Juventa as the away team started activating several of the alien consoles. "I'm curious though. How do you know so much about Xindi-Avians?"

McMillan shrugged. "Well, you've got to know such things when you're a Librarian, you know." he then grinned. "Now come on, let's see what secrets we can uncover!"

Special thanks to:
Captain MJ Mathy,
Ensign Braxx Juventa

Editor's note: the plan is to make more of such stories... so see you next time!

Runaway Runabout

Commodore RoBobby McMillan's log, stardate 2012-05-31

The Library's doing quite well, this fine thursday SL morning. So I decided to take a break from my duties, and walk through the forest area surrounding the Library and the Medical Center here in Constellation. I could almost hear the birds whistle their songs, except there are none. Perhaps we should ask the Xenology department to take a look at that.

Anyway, as I walked through the forests, I discovered something odd, from a distance. A small detail that was barely visible, but that clearly didn't belong there. What could it be?

I decided, in the best of Starfleet traditions, to explore. The idea that something unknown could be here, so close to the Library, was thrilling to say the least. As I got closer, the strange. . . light, it seemed, got brighter. Not only that, but it was part of something larger. I still couldn't quite figure out what it was, though. The trees blocked out the object.

Only when I got much, much closer, did I see what it was. It was a runabout, which had clearly crashlanded here. There seemed to be multiple hullbreaches, since even inside the foliage continued. The excitement that had grabbed me before was quickly replaced with the realisation that not too long ago, there was a major crisis going on. Whoever piloted the runabout, was at least able to set it down next to the medical center. Hopefully whomever had been inside, had made it. There was no way to tell...

I couldn't help but notice how close to the Library this ship actually was. If the runabout pilot hadn't landed this craft where it did, it could have hit the Library, or worse, the medical center itself! The results could have been disastrous. Better not think about that...

As I entered the medical building though, I noticed something strange. Like a build-up of static electricity. And then I saw it: something I had never seen before. It had a pulsing core, with several arms, or tentacles, waving around. It was beautiful and frightening at the same time. But most of all. . . it shouldn't be here. I hadn't seen any reports of a strange entity being brought to the medical center, after all...

I decided the best cause of action, was to call for help. Pretty soon, several officers and enlisted personnel arrived, and my suspicions were confirmed. This entity was emitting some sort of energy field, unlike anything I've ever seen. And judging by the crash of Mr. Weatherwax's Gryphon, it had a destabilising effect on flying vehicles! That might explain the crashed runabout too!

We quickly went off to check the runabout's logs, and indeed... due to an energy overload, the runabout's own navigational systems had destabilised. Further investigation confirmed that it was this entity which caused the overload. But how to stop it? Thankfully, we managed to determine that a quarantine field would stop the energy emissions, without hurting the entity.

A quick modification to the quarantine field later, and the problem was solved. Still, there was the problem of this entity being a living being... so we'd need to address that issue soon. Right now though, Constellation's skies were clear again!

Isn't it amazing what you find when you go out for a walk in the forests?

Opening of a Library exhibition

A big, dark-grey block appeared in the Library. And another... and then another. Together, they formed a T-shaped object. What was going on?

What was going on, was that Kendra Mollsen's own Library exhibition opened! Her exhibition showed only some of the wonderful uniforms she created, since there wasn't enough room to show all of them! With an exhibition like this, what better way would there be to open it, than a fashion show, complete with catwalk?

Lt.jg Debbydo and myself were the models, while Kendra addressed the crowd, also giving some background information. It was clear from the reactions that everyone was impressed. And they should be! Kendra, keep up the good work!

Opening Library exhibition "Memories"

On friday 20th of January, 1 PM SLT, a group of GFC people gathered in the Library, most of them dressed in their dress uniforms. Why? Because the newest Library exhibition, 'Memories', by Falo Priestman, was about to be opened.

The exhibition was put up to honour the memories of BRana Balbozar, who passed away over a year ago. Her memory still lives on, and Commodore Priestman decided to show that with an exhibition. His opening speech came right from the heart: *

Falo Priestman: some of you kno who brana was
Falo Priestman: she was the girl, the wife, the inspiration of this esibition
Falo Priestman: i met her 2008/03/24 the first time
Falo Priestman: and married her a bil later, on 2008/04/19
Falo Priestman: she was here in sl to forgot the pain of her rl
Falo Priestman: and i was happy to give her help
Falo Priestman: in rl she was interested in computerpainting , you can see some pictures of her
Falo Priestman: and she loved to be a klingon girl
Falo Priestman: and so she was the founder of the empire of nedra
Falo Priestman: created some things
Falo Priestman: like the klngor bird of prey
Falo Priestman: you know them all
Falo Priestman: she is next to the spacestation
Falo Priestman: but long speek
Falo Priestman: brana left us on 2010/11/06
Falo Priestman: she is gone to met her son, he left her 3 years ago in age of 5
Falo Priestman: well
Falo Priestman: i am sure she is looking to us and happy that we can see her pictures and that we remember her
Falo Priestman: in this way
Falo Priestman: cheers
Falo Priestman: have fun at the exhibiiotn
Falo Priestman: ㋡

With that, the exhibition was opened. And a great exhibition it is. It'll stay in the Library for the next two weeks... so feel free to drop by, and have a look!

* With permission of Commodore Priestman.

A Librarian's Death...

We at the Library have been working on many things in the past... books, exhibitions, and so on. Now, we add 'making movies' to our repertoire. Well, hopefully, anyway. This small movie, 'A Librarian's death' has been made as a test to see if it's possible. And you know what, it is! I probably need some other software though...

Anyway, have a look! Hopefully there'll be more where this one came from, soon!

Elephant in GFC!

12.30 PM SLT:
All hands, this is Captain McMillan. I have an important announcement to make. Unfortunately a mutant Roman elephant has escaped custody: we were holding it for an exhibition, but it broke out of its cage. We are doing whatever we can to capture it: even dressing up like Romans to win its trust. It's important that you all remain calm. I'll keep you informed of the situation as time progresses.

12.35 PM SLT:
This is Captain McMillan again. The mutant Roman elephant has been spotted at the Sandbox. Just act normal, as if it's not there. We hope the elephant will think he'll loose interest then, and simply move away.

Inside the sandbox...
12.37 PM SLT:
This is one strong elephant. Latest reports place the elephant *inside* the Engineering building, wrecking it from the inside out. Don't worry, we feel we're close to catching the animal. We'll be luring him onto the frozen water. With any luck, it won't be able to hold its weight.

Breaking through the walls of the Engineering building...
12.43 PM SLT:
Unfortunately, the ice is thicker than anticipated. The elephant didn't sink. We managed to steer the creature towards the shuttle parkingplace though...

The ice is too strong!

Parking place...

12.53 PM SLT:
Perhaps it was a mistake to tell the elephant that in order to stay there, it would need to pay rent. Sorry Admiral, just trying to get some more income... didn't seem to work out. The elephant is now spotted *inside* the Library. Perhaps it just wants to look at the exhibitions? Unfortunately, by doing so, it severely damaged the building! I mean, just look at it!

Inside the Library...
12.57 PM SLT:
Members of GFC, I am pleased to report that the situation has been resolved. We managed to capture the mutant Roman elephant by driving it into a tree. Sadly, all of this hasn't been without consequences: there are elephant-sized holes in the Library and the Engineering building. If anyone has any elephant sized plates to put against those holes to keep out the cold, please... let me know!

Stopped!
This was Captain RoBobby McMillan, bringing you the latest in the elephant crisis! Until next time!

Library exhibitions opening!

What do bathtubs and classes have in common? That's right, they're both featured in an exhibition at the Library! Both the 'GFC Book of Records' exhibition by former member Ensign Six of Nine, and the Academy divisional exhibition by Academy Vice Commandant Angelis Bourne, were opened today.

The Book of Records exhibition had been a special Library project Ensign Six of Nine had been working on. And what a great job she did! A bathtub race, a treasure hunt, and much, much more. They're all featured in the Book of Records exhibition in the Library. Six, thank you very much for your great work!

The Academy divisional exhibition is the first one of its kind. It shows just what the Academy is all about. A while back, all the Leads in GFC have received a notecard from me, giving them the opportunity to create an exhibition which will be featured in the Library. The Academy jumped at the chance, and thus they're the first to show their exhibition. Hopefully, this will be the first of many!

Both exhibitions will be in the Library for the next couple of weeks... so go to the Library and have a look! And if you've got an exhibition of your own that you'd like to show to GFC, feel free to contact me: Captain RoBobby McMillan.

See you in the Library!

Racing...

It's strange how one thing often leads to another. One moment we're all just standing in the Aeon Sandbox, talking about vehicles and bikes and so on, the next I'm suddenly organising a race between Sophie Johnson and Richardjrn Weatherwax. Apparently Sophie thought she was faster than Richardjrn, on a bike. Well, why not prove that?

Sophie vs. Richardjrn

It was an exciting race... well, exciting in seeing that Sophie got stuck at the first corner, while Richardjrn was having some trouble with the sim crossings. Other than that, I didn't really see where they went, and only noticed GFC's resident hologram coming towards the finishline...

...stuck...

...trouble with simcrossings...
However, at that moment, SL decided to be a pain in the proverbial backside, and most of us had to shut down the program, and start it up again. When I did, Sophie claimed she had seen Richardjrn arrive, which meant she had been first. Since this couldn't be verified, the race ended rather disappointingly, in 'Both of you could be the winner'.

It was rather difficult to race anyway, with all those simcrossings, the racers admitted. "So why not race in small cars in the Library?" I suggested. At first everyone was just looking at me, but when I rezzed the small cars in question, you could almost see the twinkling in their eyes.

Demeter Slade, Sophie Johnson, Richardjrn Weatherwax, JD Matova and myself went  to the Library to race, most of us using the small cars, while the Commodore proved that a hoverbike worked just as well. Ah, great fun.

...racing in the Library...
Something tells me I'll have to make the Library car-proof, in the near future... or at least do something about those exhaust fumes. They're really bad for the books, you know.

To seek out new life and new civilisations

By Six of Nine ( Yalene Resident )

I have been asked to write about a project i have running for the Library and the topic given to me was the Star Trek motto... "To seek out new life and new civilisations"

My first thoughts were of the breedable pets that SL offers, so i decided to  gather animals from all over the universe...SL universe. I was amazed at the variety and the diversity of life herein. And with very little knowledge,  i set out to gather information one species at a time.

For my first choice, I chose the Ozimals Bunnys. Ok, so not a lot of excitement there, but cute and can be  'worn' from inventory to be petted. As with all animals, this helps their happiness, which in turn affects their abilities to breed.

Next i decided to try Amaretto Horses. While i have noticed that this species does come in differnt sizes and breeds, it also has a very complex  order of desirability, according to its eyes, coat and any new trait. While not overly expensive to feed, they are ridable and I found that  they breed quite readily, like the bunny's.
While contemplating my next choice of species, I happen to stumble across a rare opportunity...someone offering free breedable dragons. Unable to resist the urge, i decided they would be a good addition to my growing collection. Now this is where it gets a little more complex than the horses, as they are colour coded and the number represent what i can only describe as "purity" in colour, for lack of a better description. They are also expensive to feed and  non interactive, so you can look and breed but not pet.  And while the dragons may not be as popular as they once were, they  do have a unique grouping system, ie, 1 Queen to 7 males...lucky Queen!!  LOL.

Next , I opted for Wyrnwood Faeries. Pretty, colourful and  non interactive. They lay eggs readily and you can amass quite a collection in a small amount of time. This species also has 'rare' breeds and  its really only the enthusiasts that continue to keep them.

Amaretto K9's were my next choice. K9's have not been in Sl very long, but they are popular already and very easy to look after. Resembling life like breeds of dogs, there is still amount to the breeds available...Im holding out for the Chihuahua's LOL

My  last choice, (and i say last choice because the prims and Lindens are getting thin) are the Meeroos.
Sweet, loveable and so much fun. This species also has a range of coat and eye combinations, as well as sizes. Meeroos also come with personalities, shy, lazy, friendly and mischievous. No matter, they easy to look after, love to be snuggled and are fun to watch, as they rear up on hind legs and ask to be picked up.

Now if you want to see this exhibition, its open until the 30th of September,. Everyone is welcome and you can interact and pet the Meeroos while you are here.
