What really happened with SL GO

With SL GO shutting down a lot of speculations and rumours has surfaced, The Drax Files Radio Hour show had an interview with one of SLGO/Onlive employees who was able to clear the air and even indicate that there is still possible hope of others creating a similar systems.

Scfi Convention 2015 video

This years sci-fi convention is already in full swing, for those who may miss it or just want to be reminded of what's there this season  a cool video has been made. Even the GFC booth is seen in the first few minutes.

GFC Tram & Location Ride

GalaxyFleetCommand Fleet Admiral Katrina Bixby made a video which highlighted the tram which has been build to commute members around the sims taking a more scenic route. In the video she also points out other relevant locations in the sims people may like to visit.

We are also proud that this blog gets a mention for much of the work its done publishing the group over the years.

Role Play Schedule board

Over the Last few weeks Jens Johnson (Jailan Resident) has been working on a flexible schedules board which makes you aware of the time, info and locations of the next few scheduled RP's. Other controlled uses for the device will be announce and implemented soon through the research division as part of its program to have relent and up-to-date information available in a variety of sources.

Research division will manage the devices and back end technology so to keep the systems functioning correctly.

HQ opening ribbon cutting video

For those who didn't witness the opening of the new HQ a few weeks ago missed a new creative way to cut the ribbon, some of our engineers found a totally over the top approach to unveiling a new building by creating a giant replica of the TOS episode "The Cage" fortress class phaser which when activated cut the ribbon and open the new HQ officially, below is a short video capturing that moment.

USS Magis+er bridge unvailed

A new bridge set has been introduced to the GFC by Strategic Operations newest games master Langy moorland. Part of a games masters job is to create new concepts for roleplaying in the group, within his first week in the position he's started by creating a bridge which doesn't just have the usual buttons you press which go bleep and make sounds, but he's included the ability to add random elements of chance to events which can happen in the rp.

Normally in an rp members would add to the story as they roleplay, if they add a scenario like the aliens aren't friendly and the captain wanted the aliens to be friendly, you'd have a dilemma, or if your ship gets hit, how much damage would you take or would you even be fired on in the first place.

By using elements of chance, like true or false, rolling numbers between 1-10/1-100 you can an add these to the roleplay and change the outcome to an extent, even the mission commander of the roleplay may not know how it pans out, which gives a fresh feel to rping in the group. It also allows for the opportunity to have an rp which ends in your mission being a failure, so your not sure how successful your going to be when you start.

Also the set gives a good opportunity to teach members about rping, what stations are available on the bridge and how to rp at them, Langy is putting together a tutorial for rpers to learn from.

A few of us have already tried out the set and played with the random elements and found the whole experience fun and a breath of fresh air and look forward to seeing how people rp on the set in the future.

New Gryphon/Firebird Spotted - Out of a window

So there they were, just sitting in Phoenix stations bar blissfully unaware of the new ship being test flown for the first time. I would say it was flown publically but I doubt the alcohol fuelled customers noticed the acrobatic display outside the bar window. If it wasn't for the stations security camera it may not have been spotted at all.

But grainy UFO type pictures aren't enough, we need more, so with some digging, bribing and a camera in hand, some more juicy shots have appeared of the cockpit design, with rumours of an artificial horizon meter being added to it, more news as we get it.

Second Life's Humble Beginnings

I was shown a post that I think many may be interested in, it shows, early versions of Second Life from August 2001 when it was simply called Linden world. Andrew Linden created the video at the time and he explains how the system worked back then and what was different between then and 2011.

An interesting thing to note is, some of the ways you work to terraform the world have some similarities to Minecraft, its that you had to physically destroy sections of the land to change its appearance. Though looking at the system then compared to now a huge amount of improvement was made, you can still clearly see the genesis of what we have now in there.

It does say something that from those humble beginnings we are 12 years on and second life is still a profitable business for those who run it. Enjoy the video below and thanks Langy for spotting the link.

Firestorm Question and Answers - 10 Aug 2013

The team who created the Firestorm viewer had a nearly 3 hour question and answer session where they talked about what the team are working on, the problems which they have encountered and the future direction of the viewer.

As we know there are major changes happening with Secondlife systems which requires a lot of work for the 3rd party viewers to keep up with.  Having this type of Q&A meetings the team can keep users informed of where they are updating the viewer and can explain why certain things happen the way they do and other things don't.

The subjects they talked about were, Server side baking (sunshine), CHUI, Materials, encrypted IM's, blocking older versions of the firestorm viewers and more....

For a long video it does give you a real insight into the most popular viewer used in Secondlife, enjoy watching the video below.

Gravity

Anyone who's ever tried standing in a moving build in secondlife would be used to be thrown around like a rag doll. So GFC's Research Division assistant lead started looking for a solution to maintain gravity for your avatar within moving objects giving you the ability to walk around mostly freely while the object your standing in spins around on any of its axises.

A Research and Friends short video was made to demonstrate this feet of gravity.

Starcher Trek

There are many star trek parodies doing the rounds and a new one which seems to be quite fun so far is called "Starcher Trek". They take clips from the TOS animated series and add new vocals in the style of Sterling Archer (Another animated character from a different show) as if he were the Captain of the USS Enterprise, see what you think of the videos below and you can visit their website for more when they appear.

Star Trek Continues Fan Series

Have you ever thought what may have happened if Star Trek (The Original Series) wasn't cancelled after 3 seasons? Well a group of fans thought the same thing and embaked on a project called "Star Trek Continues" where they carried on the story with new actors taking the principle roles.

As of writing this article they have uploaded 4 Youtube videos so far, 3 of them being vignettes of around 2-4 minutes and then an episode which amazingly reprises actor Michael Forest in his role as Apollo which is 50 minutes long called "Pilgrim of Eternity".

The film makers also have a  Facebook Page if you want to find out a bit more.

All these videos can be accessed below, I'd suggest you start from "Turn about intruder" and go down the list first before watching the full episode. Compared to other fan fiction, this stuff is actual not that bad at all so give it try and enjoy.

Peter Jurasik interview RFL

It was an interesting week in second life for many reasons, we had our own ball event, Second Life celebrated its 10th anniversary and the Sci-Fi convention was held, a regular thing which happens at the convention it seems is that its not uncommon for it to be attended  or participated by some famous person in sci-fi, last year i think it may have been members from star trek.

This time round Peter Jurasik, better known as Londo Mollari from Babylon 5 and Tron was interviewed which you can see in the video below. The video quality isn't great but its the audio we are really after so thanks for those who got the interview and uploaded the video.

With the Bi-Annual ball over for another 6 months and members still recovering from their hangovers already a video has leaked out, all injunctions to repeal the video have failed so between gritted teeth we present to you.
