Remembrance Day

A broad field of blood-red poppies around a solemn stone monument....

A lone bugler bugles his respects to those who have served.....

Vintage fighter planes and bombers circle the redressed airfield in Sovereign sim....

Inside one of the restored hangars, men and women (and furries) danced to the swinging Big Band sounds of the Tommy Dorsey and Glen Miller orchestras....

Veterans Day,
    Remembrance Day,
        Armistice Day,
            Volkstrauertag,
                Anzac Day (sort of).......

Whatever your particular country of origin calls it, it's the day we remember with honor the men and women who fought for their countries. Originally meant to commemorate the end of World War I, it eventually came to be the day to honor veterans of all wars.

We had a great time with some new dances we had specially bought for the dance machine, and the conversation was interesting and lively.

Thanks to Debbydo, who organized the entire event. Her dear father, who has recently died, was in the RAF. It was always one of her fondest childhood wishes to someday go dancing at one of the parties they used to throw at the nearby RAF base in the big airplane hangars. She was never able, so we built this scene for her in Second Life to make her dream come true, if only in a small way.

Many many thanks to Stuka Enyo and Snapper DeSade. Stuky organized the air show, and the two of them together supplied all the planes, practiced endlessly, and performed above our heads. Even Snappi's final landing was a success since he was able to walk away from it..........  :-)

Thanks to Wolfie and Beth, who, as always, helped me build the whole thing with their nifty suggestions and mesh parts.

Most of all, thanks to everyone who bothered to come celebrate the day with us in support of GFC. Without you, the events we plan and execute would be nothing.  :-)

Happy Halloween!

Sometime this week, when no one was looking, a dark swamp filled with sucking evil, icky tentacles, spooky ghosts, and smelly sleestak oozed out of the depths of Sovereign Lake. Anyone brave enough to venture inside was instantly attacked by the hungry monsters. So naturally the brilliant team in Social Events set up their annual GFC Halloween Party right smack in the middle of the danger zone!

Twisted trees, tangled tentacles, and glowing grass

Dark statues watch the entrance to the Swamp of Doom!!!

Ghosts and goblins enjoy the music and fun

D.J. Ed played the spooky tunes while the undead danced the new dances that were recently added to the dance machine. The conversation was lively and interesting, and those that stayed for a while had a wonderful time. Thanks for taking the time to support the group, guys.  :-)

Groovy and Far Out, Man!

The Swinging Sixties! The decade that brought us The Beatles, Star Trek, Debbydo, and Merky! For the weekend around October 17th, it was 1966 all over again. All the cool dudes and groovy chicks came up to Phoenix Space Station for...

...Fun,   Dancing,   Music,   FREEBIES!!!

No Herberts Allowed!!!

When it was in full swing, we had almost 20 tie-dyed people grooving with us, so a giant high-five to everyone that got funky!

Talk Like a Pirate Day!

Avast me hearties and shiver me timbers! September 19th was Pirate Day in GFC, our annual tradition of fun on the high seas. Social Events turned Sovereign sim into Pirate Town for all to enjoy.

Pirate Town

Swashbucklers and their wenches shook their booties to the jaunty tunes. Plunderers plundered the twelve hidden pirate treasure chests for free plunder.

Shake shake shake...

... Shake your booty

After enough rum and grog, even Long John Cobrabeard joined the fun!

Too sexy for his shirt

After the dancing, everyone settled down for a good old-fashioned hanging... errm... General Meeting wherein were extolled the virtues and grandiose plans of various divisions.

School Is In Session!

Schoolmarm Robobby McMillan rang the GFC school bell and the little boys and girls came running. It was party time!!

There was meetings, music, dancing, gesture spamming, conversation, and sexy schoolgirl outfits -- something for everyone!  :-)

With almost 20 people in attendance, the Back to School Party was a big success. Thanks everyone!

Parties in the Phoenix Station Bar

The GFC's gorgeous looking Phoenix Station Bar saw plenty of action this Saturdays as two events were held over the day.

First between 12am to around 2:30pm the AAC (academy air corp has a party).

Diabetes event in action

Later in the evening starting a 6pm and finishing at 9pm the place was rocketed to it cores as an event to bring some awareness to Diabetes was held by Social Events division.

We were glad to see those who come along and bothered to show up for such a good cause, especially those from other trek and sci-fi groups who came to celebrate a common cause and to dance the night away, you compassion and generosity were all appreciated.

This was a celebration for paying off a $25 million Diabetes Research Facility and this year invested over $900,000 in research, every little helps.

More fun from the Diabetes event

The dance was linked with a RL event which was happening simultaneously in the US at Sandpoint Eagles Club #589 Sandpoint Idaho in association with the diabetes charity JDRF.

Winter Ball 2013

The time for promotions, medals, speeches, fireworks and dancing has come round again, the 2013 Bi-Annual ball is again amongst us, the bi-yearly event awards member for their hard work in the fleet by handing out promotion and medals.

For this years winter ball the theme was andoria (ice planet from star trek enterprise series) with the tag line "Make it snow", the social events team put together a ice cave set, the tables and chairs were fashion in an icy design and a dance floor ice rink was place at the other side of the room, plus a bar for those who just wanted to chill out and take a seat whilst knocking back some serious liquor.

The ball started with an announcement by JD Matova stating the senior admirals will be delayed, Snapper Desade interjected to tell the attendees that a message had been sent and to turn on their sim land stream to listen to the message which is re-produced below.

Winter ball audio speech 2013

Once the message was played Fleet Admiral Katrina Bixby & Admiral Cobramax Mechanique were teleported down to the event and the Admiral started the proceeding by calling up members to deliver their speech of the awards and promotions they have been given. Over 50 members had been up for award or promotions, many turned up to stand at the podium and read their acceptance speeches to the audience which tops over 50 people.

Once all the speeches had been done, members and guest went outside for a photoshoot, chairs and stands had been erected for a group photo which, apart from handing a copy of the picture to those who were there, plans were also are to have the photo placed in a time capsule which was on display. Members will be able to drop items in the capsule and we can look back at it in a few years to see what the group was like in 2013.

Keeping with tradition there was a spectacular firework display to close the general proceedings with an bang and then it was back to the andoria set and the dance floor to boogie out the rest of the night.

We would like to congratulate those who received award for their great work over the last 6 months and hope the guest who also attending had a great time as well. We look forward to seeing everyone again at the summer ball 2014.

4th July 2013 Event

Most countries have a national holiday of some sort and one of the most famous throughout the world is American Independence Day which is held on the 4th of July every year.

For those who live under a rock with no sunlight and knowledge of the world, it was the day America (or not so it seems) declared their independence from the british in 1776....yeah, over 200 years ago.

Not only is it a holiday, but a good excuse for people to spend time with family members, its popular, if not in some households expected to drag the barbecue out of the shed or garage, break all fire hazard rules and throw some grilled meat on the fire.  Hotdogs and a cold beer are also very traditional food and beverage consumed by those celebrating ID4 day. There would also be parades, picnics and a variety of public events and not forgetting of course the firework displays which light up the sky.

4th of july isn't only just limited to the real world, we celebrated it in the virtual world of secondlife aswell. Wolfie and Rick Merk had laid down banners, tables and chairs, free hats, flags and sparklers were available to pick up on Sovereign beach for those who wanted to come down and have some fun, music was playing and people came and danced, Songlord put on a really cool firework display in the middle of the lake where we had a giant statue of liberty. Gooveshark101 added a dance floor and some lights he also sailed people round the lake in his speedboat giving them a different view of the fireworks going off.

Debbydo & Social Events made sure there was someone on hand so the event ran for around 12 hours, if you had popped into the GFC yesterday there was a good chance you could have partaken in the festivities. As many people as possible where given a chance to at least be part of the occasion irrespective what time zone they were in.

First Contact Weekend

As the story goes in the star trek movie "First Contact", the vulcans landed on April 5th 2063 and made contact with the human race for the first time. To celebrate Social Events put on a weekend event starting Friday 5th to Sunday 7th.

A special set was created to replicate the campsite where initial first contact was made, which included the bar, with jukebox and the Vulcan survey ship, the T'Plana-Hath. Which were created by members Richmerk Resident and Wolfie.

Many spent most of the their weekend in the sim at the campsite chatting and partying away, there was plenty of dancing going on throughout the event. A video screen was put up to watch trek related content and on Saturday the GM (General Meeting) was transferred to the camp scene and we had our weekly meeting there. This was followed by more group partying and conversations about trek, life, the universe and everything.

Everybody seemed to have had a good time and we look forward to the next big event.
