GFC Summer Ball 2015

The summers GFC ball time has come round again where we celebrate the achievements of our members with rank promotions and awards for their activities over the last six months in the group.

This years theme was Vulcan "Live long and prosper" and very much a dedicated to Leonard Nimoy who played Spock in the original star trek Series, he sadly passed away this year and it was only fitting the group thought that this ball in some way honoured him.

Over the last few weeks and months people have been pointed to the location area around the Roddenberry center as the arrival point of the event.

What you would of actually saw when you arrived on the day was a circular area with draped banners which had Summer ball written on it with a red carpet going towards the Roddenberry building entrance. You would walk up a few steps where there was a landing pad for the shuttle which was going to take you to the actual location which this year was going to be held in sovereign.

Around an hour before the official start time of the ball members gathered in the circular area build over the plaza to chill out and dance. It gave them a chance to loosen up and chat about the up and coming event.

Around 15 minutes before the ball start time the shuttle rides appeared on the landing pad which was a quick walk from the plaza and up a few steps to the shuttle platform. Once someone got in, the little shuttles would count down 10 seconds and leave to fly to the location of the ball. 

The next shuttle would appear to take the next group. These shuttles flew two members at a time, their flight path took them from galaxy into constellation sim where they were piloted low over some of the rental homes, then the shuttle crossed into sovereign sim where it headed up towards the wormhole. Upon entering the wormhole each ship was sent directly to Mount Seleya and would continue to fly down to a landing spot to drop the guests off.

The Mount Seleya set consisted of mountain regions surrounding the main activity areas. the background depicts a hot barren like planet populated with small sections for use at the ball, there was a dance area with a fountain in the middle, chairs, tables and a bar for those who simply wanted to sit and relax, huge statues where placed around the scene and the actual area where the majority of the ball will be held was right high up on a mountain top accessible via a winding staircase.

Promotion & Awards

The end of the role play event took our guest straight up to the promotions and award area. There were blocks of our guest to sit down on, Fleet Admiral Katrina Bixby and Vice Fleet Admiral Cobramax Mechanique took their places on the higher stage. For the Promotions and Awards members were called up in groups, they would stand at the bottom of the stage waiting for there names to be called up to deliver their speeches directly in-front of the senior admirals as been par the course for years at this event.

Many speeches later it was time to congratulate each other, but before going down to the After Party a giant video screen was erected to show a video Fleet Admiral Katrina Bixby had made to celebrate the up and coming 10 year anniversary of this group

Once the video had been shown it was time for guest to make their way back down the long mountain stairs to the dancing area where those who remained danced and sat around polishing their medals, updating their rank tags and relaxing to some music.

Another GFC ball comes to an end, congratulations all those who where given promotions and awards and may the next 6 months be as fruitful.

Promotion & Award Certificates sent out to members

With the 2014/15 Bi-Annual winter ball not even cold (well a weekish) certificates have started to be sent out to those lucking members who have been promoted to their shiny new ranks. Vice Fleet Admiral cobramax was tasked with getting all those certificates written up and sent out via email, skype or what other means those who haven't embraced technology required as their delivery systems, carrier pigeons  I heard was a very popular choice for many.

Myself and debbydo had ours sent  already, they will have pride and place....erms somewhere, not sure where yet, we can put it with our other medals, accolades and death threats.

Congratulations for all those who were promoted at the ball and have received their well earned recognitions, may 2015 be as fruitful as 2014.

UPDATE

Admiral JD Matova has also started sending out certificated for the awards given out through emails or what other delivery system is needed.

GFC Winter Bi-Annual Ball 2014/15

Comman....I mean, Captain Sophie Johnson reporting. "Captain" is a rank I'm never going to get used to. You find yourself standing up at the podium, presenting your acceptance speech and the awards and promotions don't quite sink in straight away.

A lot of time and effort was put into this year's Winter Bi-Annual Ball. You had people from across the fleet providing assistance wherever they could - a joint effort of talent to create a masterpiece that everyone could be proud of. After all, the masterpiece represents all the hard work that each individual puts in every day; that's why the Bi-Annual Ball is such a fantastic event to be at.

Although, you can't forget the men and women behind the scenes of the event - making sure it runs smoothly. Without their cooperation and attention, the Ball wouldn't have been a big of a success as it was. The doors opened at 1pm SLT, with the ball starting promptly at 2pm.

Pre-Dance Event organized by Social Events!

Admiral Snapper Desade and the Social Events team put together a big pre-Ball Dance event in the Galaxy Plaza outside the Roddenberry at 10am SLT. Anyone and everyone could come along, grab their dancing shoes; a partner and dance away until the main event. Over the coming hours, members and guests flooded into the Plaza in their attire and relaxed with friends and colleagues until it was time to step up.

As you stepped through off the turbolift inside the Roddenberry, a chime could be heard from the doors at the end of the corridor as you approached them. As they chime open, you become exposed to a mixture of excitement and nervousness. A fantastic ball scene - built by the miracle workers in Engineering - based around the theme the people voted for: Orions!

RoBo....I mean, Terzon and his "groupies" announced the start of the main event. In an attempt to take control of the Ajax, Terzon offered to give Vice-Fleet Admiral Mechanique a dance in honor of the friendly relationship between the Syndicate and the Federation. Unable to resist the luxurious women before him, he provided the Orions with access to his ship.....or did he? Allowing the Orions time to believe they have control of the flagship, the Vice-Fleet Admiral turned the tables by pointing the ships weapons at this very location - backed into a corner, the Orion women questioned the Vice-Fleet Admiral about the situation. He revealed that Terzon contacted Starfleet about the active Syndicate cell on the planet and that it had already been taken care of.

An amazing roleplay to kickstart what would be a great event for all!

As the roleplay finished, each participant joined the rest of the attendees at tables built and provided by Merky (richmerk). The scene itself reminiscent of the typical Orion scenes seen around the Star Trek TV franchises seen broadcast. An excellent replica built by Merky and his Engineering gnomes! A big thank you must go out to them for their hard-work so that the Ball could take place!

Fleet Admiral Katrina Bixby and Vice-Fleet Admiral Cobramax Mechanique took their places at the head of the room, people were called up in alphabetical order in groups of ten at a time to accept their awards and/or promotions and present their speeches.

Over the passing hours, many brilliant officers gave their inspiring speeches to the rest of the audience. Words that were spoken were ones of solitude and meaning - heartfelt words that officers of the fleet understood and reciprocated. The Bi-Annual Ball is an emotional time for the officers of the fleet, rewarded for their hard work and exceptional effort over the previous six month and the day comes when they're allowed to kick back and enjoy themselves.

After the awards and promotions were collected, everyone gathered outside for a sublime fireworks show put together by newly promoted Admiral TimoL McMillan! Now is was time for the dancing and celebratory drinking to commence!

Debbydo is awesome!

Bi-Annual Summer Ball 2014 - Klingon

The time of awards and promotions have come round once again and on Saturday 12th July 2014 there most important thing wasn't some World Cup 3rd - 4th place match but our Bi annual award ceremony where members were honoured for their contributions to secondlife's GalaxyFleetCommand sci-fi trek inspired group.

The ball is held twice a year and highlights members accomplishments through a variety of award and ranked promotions.

The theme for this summers ball was klingon, to publicise the event in world Jd Matova from the communications division supplied an advertising display unit and Jen Johnson (Jailan Resident) built and scripted an countdown board which showed how long in days, minutes and second before the ball, what was really cool was the feature that not only showed the presented this in english but every few second displayed the countdown in klingon.

social events division set about organising the event, Richmerk Resident and his team of ..... created an elaborate klingon set with huge statues, red carpets and klingon inspired furniture for seating and stage. The senior fleet admirals Katrina Bixby and Cobramax Mechanique had chairs placed at each side of the raised stage where they could oversee the crowd below. In the middle of the stage was podium for announcements and speeches, either side stands for those who were coming up to receive their awards to wait for their names to be called.

The event started with snapper desade standing at the podium welcoming members to the ball in full klingon regalia. Over the land audio stream a recording made by cobra and Katrina played where they talked about the klingon race, the recording can be heard below

Once the recording was finished the giant doors of the ceremony room burst open and little rp story played out in true klingon style full of intrigue, threats, love and waving of bat'leth, the script of the rp can be read here -->

Once the rp had finished the backwall of the stage rose up and reviewed debbydo and richmerk performed a special Klingon dance, one of which you've never seen the likes of and would have made General Martol cry into his bloodwine declaring that the klingon dancing like ballerinas was enough reason to challenge all concerned to a dual with the sharpest weapon in the house.

The wall came back down and Admiral Cobramax Mechanique stood at the stage podium and called out the names of those who receiving awards and promotions to come up in alphabetical order in groups of about 10 at a time to say a few words and thank people for the recognition. Around 60 members were recognised for the activities in the group and at its peak there were 52 people present at the event.

As the last person stepped down to receive their recognition,  roleplay mission commander (those who run rps in the group) came on the stage one at a time to recognise those people who had attended the many rps which are held at the GFC over the last 6 months.

Cobramax close the ball by thanking the members and as with tradition attendees spend the next few hows dancing the night away.

It has to be  one of the most memorable balls ever, from the gorgeous set, rp and klingon dance. Congratulations for those who contributed to the creation of the event, those who attending and those who won awards and promotion.

Promotion certificates and achievements

For those who got promotions over the weekend Bi-Annual ball festivities emails have started to arrive in there in boxes.  Myself and debbydo received our certificates and I'm sure many will be decorating their office walls with them.

I've never really done that, I suppose I believe in actions speaking louder than words, so creating or influencing the creation of content and procedures, having then out there available to the group is the greatest display of  all.

Medals and Certificates are a great way to be given a validation and recognition of ones participation in the GFC, but it can never really convey fully what that person has done compared to what someone else has.

I always tell the staff I have in Research "Be judged by your deeds, as no one can take them away from you". If you have created something and its used, then there's no argument about what you have done, if you've signed up lots of people, taught many classes, got good scores at AAC events or Tactical, performed a number of medicals, advised in CDO talks, built something wonderful, scripted something useful, created lovely graphics or media, made a uniform people are wearing. With all those things outs there to be seen and documented, that's something to be wholeheartedly  proud of.

Certificates and medals are great, but for me, knowing someone for instance finds something like the tphud useful or a concept I have been thinking about gets developed and is used in the group even if made by someone else, these are the things which give you the best feelings, medals and certificates are a beautiful way of  appreciating the work someone has done, though a chest full of medals and a wall plastered with certs doesn't unfortunately truly convey what a person has achieved, only their deeds and what they leave behind for people to use, their interactions and activities do.

Awards Board

As a reminder of the award and promotions given out at Saturday's Bi-Annual ball a board has been erected in the Aeon Sim showing the names of those who were decorated. You can find the wall on the south side of the sandbox where Admiral Cobramax Mechanique usually does he pre-rp briefing for the Ajax Roleplay on Tuesdays at 6pm.

Pop in and have a look who got shiny medals or a big fat promotion.

Janel Promotion to PO2

Congratulations today to Janel Doune who received promotion to the rank of PO2 from Captain  Dolamite Giffen. In his group notice to the fleet he declared 

"Janel Doune is now the Alpha Team Leader for Tactical, she is now the point person for Hostage Rescue. Based upon her service, and dedication, as well as skill in leading a team, I have promoted her to PO2.... Effective Immediately. Please congratulate her!"

Borg Promotion

Congratulation to Seven of Nine (zannadu Resident) on promotion to Crewman 1st Class (C1C) for
her contribution to the Away Team Set Project, organisation skills and planet access. I'm sure there are many other promotions to come.

All too much for Dustin

Dustin Sunflower (aka Dustin Thunderstorm) was give some good news today that he had been promoted to the lofy hights of C1C, this was followed by him swaying wildly and fainting. Fortunate for him he was in the sandbox and the grains of finely cut sand cushioned his fall. The minuscule little creature who live on those grains of sand were not so fortunate.

It would have been interesting to have know what those small creatures last words would have been. "Why is it getting dark so quickly", "Is it me or is that big green planet coming towards us at an alarming rate" or just "What the Fu..<splat>".

Dustin eventually recovered from his good new, dusted off the remains of the sandbox village he just landed on and continued on his merry way.
