Relay for life
Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society's fundraising activity (RFL) is a charity which offers everyone in a community an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer. Teams of people from all walks of life have fun while raising much-needed funds to fight cancer and raise awareness of cancer prevention and treatment.
The American Cancer Society's real world Relay for Life began in Tacoma, Washington in May 1985.
Dr. Gordy Klatt, a Tacoma colorectal surgeon, decided to personally raise money for his local American Cancer Society office and show support for his patients by doing something he enjoyed – running marathons.
Relay for Life in Second Life is an annual event; volunteers form or join teams to have fun while fundraising and raising awareness from mid-March through mid-July.
In 2010, Relay for Life in Second Life raised over $222,000 for the American Cancer Society.
Relay for Life has become an international movement in RL and in SL. In 2010 participants
from over 30 countries took part in Relay for Life
of Second Life.
The GFC participated by holding events round the pips and with a guest speaker for RFL talking about the good work the charity was about in the academy on Saturday night.
The RFL event was a great success with three parties Friday, Saturday and Sunday night. All parties had a good turn out with a competition for the best dressed super hero Friday and Saturday night. Friday had four winners sharing a 300 lindens pot each getting 75 lindens. Our resident dj on Friday was dj Falo Preistman.
Saturdays party went off with a swing and music from the 80s era which brought back great memories for us oldies who were there.
